It’s been 15 years since Dwayne Johnson first expressed his desire to play Black Adam, a classic DC Comics villain dating back to the 1940s. The project has been stuck in development hell for years, but the movie is finally coming to theaters this fall. And we now have the first trailer for black Adamgiving us a peek into the character’s origin story and his inevitable encounter with the Justice Society of America (JSA).
(Spoilers for some of the comics below.)
The character appeared as a villain in the first issue of Marvel family Caricature of 1945. Legally speaking, it is an ancient Egyptian named Teth Adam, who was chosen by the magician Shazam as the latter’s successor. Th Adam was supposed to be pure in heart, but once he had Shazam’s powers, he became corrupt, killed the ruling pharaoh, and assumed the Egyptian throne. Unable to negate those forces, Shazam banished Teth Adam to the farthest star in the universe.
It took Teth Adam 5,000 years to return to Earth – this was the 1940s, after all – where he met the Marvel family. Eventually, a family member tricks him into saying “Shazam” again, and Teth Adam reverts to his human form, 5,000 years old instantly. This is the story filmed in 2019 Shazam, when the therapist explains what happened to young Billy Batson. (In this movie version, Teth Adam, aka Black Adam, unleashed the Seven Deadly Sins on Earth and wiped out entire civilizations.)
DC Comics acquired the rights to Black Adam in the 1970s, and he became a recurring character in their lives Shazam family Caricature. Initial interest in making a character-focused film dates back to the early 2000s, with Johnson in the title role, but New Line Cinema suspended development in 2009. In 2014, Warner Bros. picked up development. The project, with the intention of making Black Adam a part of the DCEU. Originally, Johnson’s Black Adam was supposed to appear as a villain Shazam, but by that time he was a huge movie star obtainable from the banks, and the studio decided to give him an independent film. (He appears briefly in hologram form when the wizard tells Billy the backstory.)
black Adam Johnson reunited with jungle trip Director Jaume Colette Serra. The premise of the film is that the exiled Black Adam resurfaces some 5,000 years after his banishment and is pushed into the modern world, where his ruthless style of fighting villains does not fit into the mainstream culture. customs.
black Adam He will also submit a JSA to DCEU. Pierce Brosnan plays Kent Nelson, aka Doctor Fate, a member of the South Sudanese Army who wears a magical helmet. Noah Centineo plays the Atom Smasher, a member of the JSA who can manipulate its molecular structure to change its size and strength. Aldis Hodge plays Hawkman, an archaeologist and reincarnation of an Egyptian prince. Its distinctive wings give it the power of flight. Quintessa Swindell plays Cyclone, the granddaughter of the Red Tornado, who controls the wind and can generate sound.
The cast also includes Sarah Shahi as Adriana Tomaz, a college professor and resistance fighter in the fictional Kandak Nation, Black Adam’s original home. She is interested in love in the comics, and it seems that she will play a similar role in the film. We also know that the crime group Intergang will appear in the movie.
The trailer hints at the character’s origin story, where we see Teth Adam as a slave in ancient Egypt who lost his son and was given powers similar to those of Shazam. But we don’t learn much about the plot in any other way. This appears to be by design, according to producer Hiram Garcia, who recently told io9 that this first trailer is meant to be more than just a teaser. There are glimpses of the Atom Smasher, Cyclone, and Doctor Fate, who tells Black Adam that he can choose to be either the villain or the savior of this world. Thera also has an expressive interaction with Hawkman, who is likely positioned as a moral foil for the Black Adam hero. Hochman insists that superheroes don’t kill people. Black Adam replied, “Okay, I do.” And, of course, we get extracts from Johnson’s dry brands.
black Adam It hits theaters on October 21, 2022.
