Andrew Ahn, the film’s director, told Entertainment Weekly, “Joel and I felt very committed to choosing gay actors for this. We know that the depth of talent exists within this community, and I think it’s really unfortunate that a lot of Hollywood still has this idea that they don’t You can do that — like, that there are live actors who might play these roles better. I think it devalues the live experience that an actor can bring to a role.”

The movie is adapted Pride and prejudice. Booster grew up watching Pride and prejudice Series and I Love the 2005 movie. However, the first time he read Jane Austen’s book was when he was vacationing on Fire Island.

Booster told Variety that he chose to take on an assignment in this novel because “Jane talks about chapter in all of her books, but it’s very crystallized and the characters are lively in Pride and prejudice. And it’s the funniest work of hers, by far.”

The title of the project was originally short trip It was meant to be a serial on Quibi.

In March 2020, Quibi presented a serialized arrangement of short tripAnd, in December 2020, Quibi closed. Searchlight Pictures were interested in choosing the project if Booster rewrote it as a feature film.

It was not difficult for him to make this change. Booster explained, “Even when I was writing it in Quibi, it was always structured as a movie, divided into 10 chapters. I removed those chapter breaks, and sent it in as a full script.”

Originally, Stephen Dunn was set to direct the series on Quibi, but after Searchlight purchased the project, Andrew Ahn was brought in as director.

Several of the cast members were good friends prior to the movie. Buster said that Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers are his best friends.

Poster said, “I didn’t know Thomas [Matos] When we started filming, Thomas changed the way we all talked by the end of the six weeks. We’ve all been following their vocal pattern because it’s funny and very specific.”

Yang chose Britney Spears’ “Sometimes” as the song to sing in the karaoke scene.

It was always written in the script that Yang’s character would be singing karaoke at that moment in the movie. “I asked Bowen what list of songs he’d be comfortable singing on, and ‘Sometimes’ was one of the best options. And we were able to get it,” Poster said.

Matos and Rogers were added to a karaoke performance later and created their own choreography without telling anyone. Booster said, “It was a shock and a surprise to everyone when we started shooting it.”

Booster’s love interest was originally written for a non-Asian person of color, but the role went to Filipino-American actor Conrad Recamura.

“In Chemistry we read, Conrad Joel baffled, and I loved seeing that,” Ahn said.

Booster was never in a relationship when he started writing the movie. When he started producing the movie, he met video game producer John Michael Kelly and started dating him.

Then Booster used the real conversations he had with Kelly to rewrite some of the scenes he had with Ricamora.

Finally, the actors lived together at the Fire Island home during filming.

Booster explained, “The week we got on Fire Island and staying in the same house together was unbelievable. It was so ridiculous. A lot of the shootings in New York or L.A. lead to getting hit and then getting out and going home. able to finish Filming day and saying, “What kind of pizza are we going to have? What movie are we watching tonight?” It sounded like summer camp.
